Smells like Halloween
I always loved Halloween
I always loved Halloween. The black and orange, the dried leaves scattering and crunching under my feet. I always liked dry Halloweens more than wet ones. Wet Halloweens always made me sad. The leaves would get slippery and would kinda take the fun out of the night. I would wish days ahead of Halloween for a dry one. “Smells like Halloween” would be something I would say before I heard Christopher Moltisanti utter that phrase on an Episode of the Sopranos. When I heard that character say that, I said to myself “Yes, that’s what I would have said”! Halloween smell is when people start to use their fireplaces.
Riverdale
Back in Riverdale, Illinois in my childhood my sister and I would normally go out trick or treating. At least when I was kinda young my sister would go out with me to protect me. Later I would go out with neighborhood friends. With my sister we would go out with Jewel’s paper shopping bags. Sometimes re-visting certain houses two times. We would remember the houses giving out the candy that we liked. At the end of the night, my sister and I would have maybe 3 or 4 large, paper shopping bags filled to the brim with candy.
Counting candy
At the end of our night, my sister and I would stack and sort all of our Mars Bars, or Snickers, or Baby Ruth candy bars… etc. I would pile up all the Baby Ruths etc..in one pile or pyramid. Count them and say to my sister “Ill trade you two Baby Ruths for two of your Kit Kats”. Fun times. We normally did our candy sorting in the basement of our Chicagoland brick bungalow.
Trick or treating with friends
Going out with neighborhood friends, mainly other boys, we would never play tricks on people or prank them. We simply went out and goofed off. I’d go further away from my house but I never did get as much candy as when I was young and with my sister. I forget the costumes I went out trick or treating with. Mainly my costumes were home made. I never liked store bought costumes. I may have gone trick or treating when I was young with plastic, store bought costumes. I later out grew the store bought ones, and liked assembling my home made costume later in my child hood. I forget when I finally stopped trick or treating. I want to say maybe when I hit my teen years. You would be made fun out of if you trick or treated too late in life.
Shitty houses
Going trick or treating, I have to mention that there were shitty houses to goto. People giving out things that had no idea what fun was. These people had no fucking clue. I am sure these types of people had hand-made doilies under their knick nacks in their front rooms..etc For example there was the lady or man giving out pennies. Then there was another lady or man giving out apples. Screw that shit! Pennies? I am not a fucking piggy bank lady. And fuck apples! I want junk food. Candy! Some people had no idea what fun was. But every year, there were one or two houses that were giving out either pennies or fruit. It pissed me off. However I tried really hard not to utter a word of disappointment out of respect for my elders and common courtesy. At times I let out a “Awww”. hah
Great memories
I had a great child hood. Loved many things. I am very lucky. I have lovely, German parents. A good sister. I love my mom, dad and sister very much. My parents worked hard to make lots of great memories for my sister and myself. I will never forget that.
